Lakshmipuram: DCP to submit report today

The family of the deceased have assured of action been taken against culprit

Bengaluru: In a bid to bring back normalcy, following clashes between police and public over the suicide of 24-year-old cab driver Pradeep, allegedly after police torture, senior officers have camped in the area as part of confidence building exercise on Sunday. Over 500 policemen have been deployed to monitor the law and order situation in Lakshmipuram on Sunday. Shops and commercial establishments in the area remained closed.

Refusing to divulge much, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said the police are trying to ascertain the criminality of the alleged officers in order to initiate penal action. “We have suspended Circle Inspector C.D. Nagaraj and are probing further to verify the allegations levelled against him,” he added. DCP South-East Rohini Sepat will be submitting a report in this regard to the city police commissioner on Monday. The senior officer had called on the family of the deceased Pradeep, assuring them of necessary action against the officials involved.

The deceased’s brother, Sandeep, said, “We have met senior officers and given our statement. They have assured that the necessary action would be taken against the policemen involved.”On Saturday late evening a riot like situation had prevailed at Lakshmipuram, after the policemen were assaulted and a police motorcycle (Cheetah) was set on fire by a fiery mob leading to a mild lathi-charge by the police.

Based on a tenant’s complaint, Pradeep was picked up by the KG Nagar police on Wednesday night and allegedly tortured in the police custody for three days. He was released on Friday night after a bribe of Rs15,000 was allegedly paid by the family.
