Class 2 child loses eyesight, teacher beats him with steel scale

Case registered against teacher as per IPC Section 324 but has not been arrested yet

Thanjavur: A class 2 student lost vision in his right eye after he was beaten up by his teacher with a steel scale near Kumbakonam. Ilamaran (6), son of Chezhiyan of Kudithangi village, in Kumbakonam taluk, was studying in class 2 at Minarva primary and nursery school at Thirupurambiyam.

On Wednesday, the boy was reportedly talking to his classmates when his teacher was teaching. His class teacher R. Aruljothi, who became furious, beat the boy with a steel scale.

The boy, who suffered injury on the iris of his right eye, was immediately taken to a private eye hospital in Kumbakonam by the school authorities. Later, he was referred and taken to Aravind eye hospital in Madurai where a surgery was performed.

However, the doctors in the hospital expressed helplessness in completely restoring the eyesight, the boy’s uncle T. Kumar, in a complaint, said.

Based on a complaint from Kumar of Kudithangi, the Swamimalai police have registered a case under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or means) of the Indian Penal Code against the teacher. However, the teacher was not arrested.
