Nakkapalli not feasible for airport: Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju

Wind direction in Nakkapalli from North to South is not feasible for setting up an airport
Visakhapatnam:Nakkapalli, 80km away from the city, one of the probable sites for the proposed Greenfield airport does not seem to be technically feasible. Union civil aviation minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Monday said that wind direction in Nakkapalli from North to South is not feasible for setting up an airport.
Instead, Bhogapuram, between Vizag and Vizianagaram, is technically more suitable as the wind direction there is from east to west. There has been stiff resistance from locals to Nakkapalli site as it is far away from the city.
“Nakkapalli is not technically feasible, while Bhogapuram, which the AAI high level committee visited recently is more suitable and in my opinion an airport there would cater to the needs of all the three districts in north Andhra,” the minister said.
“There are nearly 400 airstrips, 125 airports in the country but of them only 73 are either operational or economically viable. Hence, we will study the economic viability too here,” added the minister.
