Ennore-Thatchur road work to begin

The proposed new road will connect the northern gate of Ennore Port and Thatchur on NH-5
Chennai: Northern Port Access Road, an ambitious project to improve connectivity to the Ennore port, is all set to take off with the state highways department commencing land acquisition process.
The 25 km-long four-lane road will provide the much needed direct connectivity between the port and Thatchur on national highway-5. According to the highway department sources, the orders have been issued to commence the land acquisition for the project aimed at improving connectivity to the Ennore port and to boost industrial growth in North Chennai.
The proposed new road will connect the northern gate of Ennore Port and Thatchur on NH-5 with an additional spur road for connecting to the Thiruvottiyur-Ponneri- Pancheti (TPP) Road. This will also cater to the needs of the recently developed Kattupalli ship yard.
Sources said the total length of this road connecting Ennore Port to Thatchur would be about 21.15 km and length of the TPP link road will be 4.35 km. The detailed feasibility report for the project was originally done by consultants for the NHAI and TNRDC has engaged the same consultant to update the feasibility study and fixing the alignment with new topographic survey. The revised alignment proposed by the consultant was approved and the work would be executed in two phases.
In the first phase, construction of the road from the Ennore Port entrance to Neidavoyal village and till Vallur Link road totalling 10.55 km-length would be taken up. Subsequently, construction of the balance portion of length 14.95 km from Neidavoyal to Thatchur in NH-5.
The proposed road would provide easy access to NH 5, which connects Kolkata via Andhra Pradesh and Odhisha from Ennore port. This road would also help the vehicles from the Chennai port, hitherto taking Ennore Expressway and Inner Ring Road, to reach NH-5 at a shorter distance.
