Twitter takes its next ambitious step

Twitter has started making inroads towards e-commerce to generate more revenue

Mumbai: Twitter appears to have taken one step closer towards adding payments to its app.

Earlier this week, several users reported seeing a new ‘Payments and shipping’ option in the settings of Twitter’s Android app. While the option isn’t yet functional (users who have spotted it said it doesn’t actually do anything), it’s clear that the ‘Payments and shipping’ could be a feature that Twitter is trying out.

This is in line with the social network’s habit of testing new features with small numbers of users before a larger rollout. Whether it’s just a test or not, it sure points at bigger things to come from Twitter on the e-Commerce field — in particular, starting a native shopping platform.

Earlier this June, a ‘Buy now’ button was tested within some tweets that also linked to shopping site Fancy.

The Twitter’s button popped up on mobile, but not on the web, just like the recent case. It’s also common knowledge that Twitter’s latest acquisition was CardSpring, a startup that helps businesses build infrastructure for supporting mobile payments.

Embracing e-Commerce will definitely help Twitter get more advertisers, and maintain its vital user engagement.
