LEDs for Hyderabad old city before end of Mayor’s tenure

Streetlights in several wards are not working, broken or stolen

Hyderabad: All streetlights and median lighting on the main roads of the old city are to be replaced by light-emitting diodes (or LEDs), said Hyderabad Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain.

The Mayor is keen on taking up this project before his term expires in November.

On a pilot basis, the stretch from Chandrayangutta till Charminar will get LEDs in six-week time.

The Standing Committee of the GHMC on Wednesday approved the proposal for improvement of illumination levels in all the Greater Hyderabad city roads, by replacing existing fittings with LEDs.

The old city has 50 civic wards. At several stretches in these wards, the streetlights are either not in working condition or they have been robbed or broken.

The Mayor said, GHMC is burdened with huge electricity bills, to the tune of crores every month.

By installing the LEDs power consumption will be reduced by at least 20 to 30 per cent.

Even if a few crores are saved, the municipal corporation can use the same money for other development works in the city.”
