Woman tries to end life in Kerala High Court

Woman hospitalised after she said she had consumed tablets

Kochi: A dramatic scene unfolded at Kerala High Court on Monday when a 25-year-old woman, who was produced before it on a habeas corpus plea, made a startling revelation. To everyone’s shock, she said that she had consumed 10 tablets in an attempt to commit suicide after her parents had denied her permission to live with her boy friend-turned husband.

A division bench comprising Justice P.N. Ravindran and Justice Jayasankaran Nambiar immediately sent the girl to the Ernakulam General Hospital. The court, in its written order, mentioned that the woman had consumed poison and was sent to hospital.

Haseen Muhammed of Kasargod had filed a habeas corpus petition on July 25 seeking custody of his wife. He argued that his wife was forcibly taken from his house and put under house arrest.

Following an order of the bench, the police produced her at 10 am and soon after hearing her submission, the HC summoned the doctor at the High Court dispensary. A doctor examined the woman and adv-ised that she needed to be hospitalised.

According to Haseen, his marriage with the woman was held on June 16 but the very next day her father and brother along with some goons had reached his house and forcibly taken her away. While in the custody of her parents, she sent Haseen some SMS seeking help. The HC directed the police not to allow the petitioner and her parents to interact with her.
