Karnataka HC okays Amanath Bank merger with Canara Bank

Court directed the merger should be completed within 30 days
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the issuance of a gazetted notification within 15 days on the merger of Amanath Co-operative Bank with Canara Bank. The court further directed that after the notification is issued, the merger should be completed within 30 days.
Former Railway Minister Mr C.K. Jaffer Sharief along with five others, had approached the high court challenging the proposed merger of Amanath Co-operative Bank with Canara Bank, after the Board of Amanath Bank announced plans to merge with Canara Bank, to overcome the crisis it was facing.
Recreation Clubs
The HC has directed the CID to probe the activities of recreation clubs in the state and present a report in six months. The ADGP, CID, was directed to probe the skill games following allegations that gambling was happening in the guise of skill games. The court expressed concern over such alleged activities at these clubs which are forcing scores of middle class families into poverty due to gambling.
The court was hearing a case pertaining to a recreation club which had challenged the action of the police which raided its premises following charges of gambling. The police had registered an FIR against the owner for allegedly allowing gambling. The court was informed about the skilled games and the consequences of gambling along with a CD on such games.
Nithyananda case
The high court on Thursday stayed a NBW issued against self-styled godman Nithyananda till Friday (August1). A Ramanagaram court had issued the NBW following directions by the high court.
The high court had earlier dismissed the petition filed by controversial self-styled godman Swami Nithyananda challenging the lower court’s order directing him to appear for a medical examination.
The court while dismissing his petition, had permitted the CID, which is investigating charges of rape, conspiracy, unnatural sex, cheating, criminal intimidation and showing disrespect to religious sentiments since 2010 against the self-styled godman, to subject Nithyananda to a medical test. The court further ordered that the investigating authorities can take him into custody if Nithyananda fails to appear for the medical examination including a potency test and voice test.
The case of rape and criminal intimidation was booked against Nithyananda by a devotee with the Bidadi police, which was later transferred to the CID.
NBW against Sriramulu
A lower court here on Thursday has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Bellary MP B Sriramulu in an alleged cheating case. The court issued the orders after Mr Sreeramulu failed to appear before it despite several summons issued to him in the case.
Mr L. Somanna, a former president of Mysore district BSR Congress had filed a complaint with the police against Mr Sreeramulu, accusing him of cheating him of '2.96 crore.
Mallya in court
Chair­man and Managing Director of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd Vijay Mallya on Thursday appeared before a lower court pertaining to a case of non-remittance of tax deducted at source (TDS) from employees’ salaries, to the government.
The Special Court for Economic Offences had earlier issued summons to Mr Mallya following which he approached the high court. The court had dismissed his plea.
