Chennai: The CISF once again helped nab a thief at Chennai airport.
The officials found an airline loader stealing a ‘cooling glass’ from a passenger’s bag on Monday while transporting the baggage to the conveyor belt.
Last week, the security officials had alerted Customs about a man exchanging a bag with a woman in order to evade screening.
On checking the contents of the bag, Customs officials found 2.5 kg gold biscuits in it.
In recent times, the CISF, responsible for the security at the city airport, has helped in finding culprits involved in stealing and also smuggling cases.
An airport source says that the terminals at the city airport are now fully under surveillance, while it is left to the airline companies to secure their flights and the local police to tighten security outside the terminals.
According to the airport source, 14 passengers had complained to authorities about missing cell phones, I-pads, laptops and cameras in aircraft in 2013. There have been six complaints in the first six months of this year.
Similarly, six passengers have complained about losing their ATM cards in 2013, while there have been only two complaints so far this year.
There were also seven gold missing cases registered in 2013.
Early this year, CISF officials helped nab a loader who had misused an ATM card belonging to a passenger.
“The passenger had dropped his ATM card while collecting his baggage. A loader picked up the card and when he used it to withdraw cash, he was traced. “We had the CCTV footage of the loader and so we were able to catch him when he used the card,” a senior CISF official said.
Similarly, CISF officials also conduct random frisking on employees who leave the airport premises. In one incident last month, they apprehended a person who tried to sneak out with a camera that he picked up from an aircraft while cleaning it.
“We have covered the terminals fully with CCTVs. The airlines need to have CCTVs inside their aircraft to detect such thefts,” the official added.
