Oommen Chandy: Will correct mistakes if any

Government not for publicity on Munnar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Mr Oommen Chandy on Saturday said that the government would take a decision on the future course of action on the Munnar issue after examining the High Court verdict in detail.

The High Court on Friday had directed the state to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Cloud Nine Resorts in Munnar and flayed the anti-encroachment drive conducted in the hill resort during V S Achuthanandan’s tenure as Chief Minister in 2007.

The Chief Minister told mediapersons that the government was not for publicity but for action. He said the government would rectify mistakes, if any, in connection with Munnar issue.
Sources said Mr Chandy and Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash will hold detailed discussions on the fallout of the verdict besides exploring the possibilities of challenging the verdict in the Supreme Court. The government is in touch with legal experts and those who handled the Munnar case and would finalise opinion in consultation with all.

With the Opposition Leader Mr V S Achuthanthan already coming out against the verdict and even going to the extent of suspecting the intentions behind it, the government has come under pressure to act fast on the issue. The veteran CPM leader is also in touch with legal experts and even exploring the option of moving the Supreme Court if the state government fails to challenge the verdict at the earliest.

Mr Achuthanandan had termed the judgment as one favouring the encroacher. Even a section of environmentalists and social scientists had expressed reservations over the high court verdict.
