Bengaluru: The recent rape of a six-year old schoolgirl has created an online war through the various social media tools. From people condemning the incident on Facebook, to starting an online petition, it’s all happening.
The mother of a 3-year old girl, who was shocked, scared and outraged, has started an online petition on change.org asking the Education Minister of Karnataka, Kimmane Ratnakar to issue a directive to all schools in Bangalore to impose security measures for the safety of children. The petition has already received 74, 835 supporters.
Sumedha from Whitefield Rising, who has been actively protesting the rape of the school child says, “There have been many messages and suggestions on the Facebook page called Vibgyor High Marthahalli Parents and Whitefield Rising, coming from distraught and concerned parents as the issue doesn’t just concern one school. There are a lot of suggestions and a group is collating them to present it to the government.”
Outraged by the sexual assault case, mothers of school-going children have been making strong demands on the Facebook page Mums of Bangalore. It has gained a membership of around 14,000 over the last few days, with mothers of school-going children coming out with various suggestions for the children’s protection.
The education minister has the authority to make all schools in Karnataka more accountable. There are heavy demands in social media platforms asking the
education department to issue a directive that all the schools should take full responsibility for the safety and security of the children during school hours.
They are to form a sexual harassment committee comprising of teachers and parents, for conducting full background checks on all employed and contractual staff and to install CCTV cameras in and around the school compound.
