NCP may demand 144 seats in Maharashtra

Congress and NCP are running a coalition government in the state

Mumbai: The NCP has given a jolt to the Congress. Its chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said his party might demand more than 144 seats for contesting the state Assembly elections.

Mr Pawar said it could also be less than that. The decision would be taken only after assessing the local situation of the Assembly constituencies, said Mr Pawar.

“Our stress will not be on demanding more seats,” said Mr Pawar. “We will ask only for those seats that we would be able to win, which could be more or less than 144. One thing all has to accept that we have not got the expected results in the recently held general elections... we have started our studies after which decision on the numbers will be taken,” he said.

Senior NCP leader such as deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and state president Sunil Tatkare have demanded 144 seats from Congress for contesting the state Assembly elections. Ajit Pawar had even threatened to snap ties with the Congress, if the NCP’s demands were not fulfilled.
