Budget 2014: Special stress on growth for North East region

Government will also set up a sports university in Manipur

New Delhi: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley announced a rahab package of Rs 500-crore for displaced Kashmiris and a Rs 53,706 crore package, for developing road and rail connectivity and fostering of organic farming for the Northeast region.

The funds sanctioned under the ‘Relief and Rehabilitation of Jammu and Kashmir Migrants’ show a three-fold increase from Rs 151.87 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 660 crore .

Underlining the importance attached by the NDA government to the Northeastern part of the country, Mr Jaitley announced that a 24x7 television channel will be launched for the region apart from setting up a sports university in Manipur.

“The Northeastern region has suffered from under-development and a sense of isolation due to lack of proper connectivity,” Mr Jaitley said while presenting the Budget in Parliament.
