Love hit me in the stomach: Vir Das

Vir Das talks about his upcoming film and how he’s the complete opposite of what he plays
Mumbai: In his upcoming film Amit Sahni Ki List, Vir Das will be seen on a quest for the girl of his dreams. The actor who plays an investment banker in ASKL says he drew inspiration from his brother-in-law. “Yes I based the character on my brother-in-law who is an investment banker abroad. I picked up his mannerisms and style of speaking too,” he says.
Elaborating on his character Vir says, “My character Amit gets his heart broken in an absurd way. So he starts putting down a list of qualities that he is looking for in a girl. He manages to come up with 800 of them! He then spends three days a week going on dates with different women, but ends up rejecting perfectly fine girls due to silly reasons only because they don’t live up to the list.”
While Vir has found his perfect partner in real life, (long-time girlfriend Shivani Mathur) we enquired about any such list that he may have drawn before he met her. He laughs at the idea and adds, “I am the complete opposite of Amit in real life. I don’t believe in planning such things. Love is supposed to just catch you unawares and hit you in the stomach. That is exactly what happened with me.”
Vir has a flourishing career on stage too. How does he manage to make time for both the mediums? He explains, “I have innovatively created my film contract. Most shows happen during the weekend, so I don’t shoot for films on Saturday nights and Sundays —those days are reserved purely for theatre.”
Another interesting film that Vir is part of is Santa-Banta with funny man Boman Irani. Speaking about it the actor says, “I would wonder how it would be to do a large scale commercial comedy and then Santa-Banta came my way. I didn’t know who my co-actor was, but when I heard it was Boman I was thrilled.
Both of us come from theatre backgrounds and we love to rehearse and improvise.”
There was also talk about Vir and Kunal Khemu coming together for another project after the success of their previous film Go Goa Gone, but the actor says it isn’t happening soon. He adds, “After Delhi Belly, Kunal (Roy Kapoor) and I got offered some 100 similar films together, but we didn’t take it up. It was a similar case with Kunal after Go Goa Gone.
If we come together, the script has to be different and better than the original film that we did together. Only then does it make sense to come together again. The audience wants to see something new — there is no point recycling ideas.”
