Cops on toes for Prime Minister's Jammu and Kashmir visit

Ahead of the PM visit, policemen are keeping a tight vigil at all entry and exit points

Srinagar: An extraordinary security blanket was clamped across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit Friday, his first to the state as Prime Minister.

During his day-long trip, Mr Modi will inaugurate a rail link connecting Katra, the Vaishno Devi base camp, with the Northern Railway network, and a hydroelectric power project at Uri, near the LoC.

He will also attend a security review meeting at 15 Corps headquarters here.

A number of separatist outfits have called for a Valley-wide shutdown during the visit.

On Thursday, the Army said it foiled a second infiltration bid in less than 24 hours along the LoC in Poonch district.

The Prime Minister will later fly to Srinagar where he will address a Sainik Sammelan (soldiers’ meet), official sources said. He may talk about India’s ties with Pakistan at this event.

Ahead of the PM visit, policemen are keeping a tight vigil at all entry and exit points of the state.

Hotels and lodges were being checked while security personnel combed all nearby hills and took positions at vantage points.

Udhampur-Katra rail route was slated to be commissioned during October 2014 but it got delayed after a tunnel caved in.
