Union minister Venkaiah Naidu takes up issue on Medical seats

Mr Naidu also asked Mr Vardhan to make efforts to approach SC along with the MCI

New Delhi: As medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana face cancellation of additional MBBS seats, Union parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday asked health minister Harsh Vardhan to convene a meeting of officials from both the states with the Medical Council of India to discuss the issue and arrive at an amicable solution.

Mr Naidu also asked Mr Vardhan to make efforts to approach the Supreme Court along with the MCI to get permission to allow further inspection of the colleges.

“This is a very difficult situation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The medical colleges could not augment infrastructure facility due to the uncertainty over bifurcation of the state. The previous government had said that no inspection of these colleges could take place after May 15,” said Mr Naidu.

To find a solution to the issue, Mr Naidu said, he met Mr Vardhan and explained to him the situation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and asked him to intervene immediately and resolve the issue by taking the MCI into confidence.

Mr Naidu said the health minister agreed to his suggestion of calling the concerned officials from both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a meeting on the issue before any decision can be taken.

The colleges under scanner are Gandhi Medical College, medical colleges in Nizamabad, Nellore, Tirupati, Andhra Medical College and S.V. Medical College.
