Shortage of funds hits Hyderabad sewage projects

The seewage work started in 2008 at a cost of Rs 400 crore

Hyderabad: Projects for the modernisation of sewage lines and the construction of underground facilities taken up in the city have been moving at a snail’s pace since the last six years. The project crossed the completion deadline long ago.

The works which have not been finished since years is causing great inconvenience to the public as dug up roads are yet to be restored. The sewer line project for strengthening the sewerage system in the old city started in 2008 under the JNNURM scheme at a cost of Rs 400 crore. But it is still incomplete even after six years with only around 90 per cent of the works finished.

The work which was divided into two zones has been further divided into three phases, and each phase is assigned to one company. The sewerage master plan has been prepared to meet demand up to 2021 for 351.63 sq km. According to the original timeline, the project should be completed by 2012-end.

Similarly the Sherlingampally underground drainage project launched five years back at a cost of Rs 200 crore is also incomplete. “Though the laying of the drainage line was completed acquiring land to set up sewerage treatment plants is a hurdle,” said an official of HMWS&SB.

The underground drainage work taken up with an initial funding of Rs 75 crore is still incomplete with less than 4 km pipeline laid. A senior official admitted that funds was a problem.

The case of the Godavari phase I water project is also the same. Though the pipeline has been laid for 186 km from Yellampally to the city’s outskirts the work is likely to get extended.

“Godavari Phase I will be completed once the mains work starts. It needs Rs 300 crore. We have placed a proposal before the government for funds,” said J. Shyamala Rao, the MD of HMWS&SB.
