RR Patil warns against misuse of social media

Maharashtra govt is mulling action against those who upload objectionable posts

New Delhi/mumbai: The Maharashtra government is mulling action against not only those who upload objectionable posts on Facebook but also against those who “like” and forward them, state home minister R.R. Patil said on Monday.

The move follows the killing of an information technology professional Mohsin Shaikh in Pune last Monday after derogatory pictures of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji and late Bal Thackeray were uploaded by unk-nown people on Facebook.

Meanwhile Union information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday pointed out that the freedom of speech comes with responsibility and activities on social media should unite rather than divide. The minister also reiterated that the government should not exercise control over media.
