Assembly elections: Modi readies BJP to face elections in key states

PM asks BJP general secretaries to prepare for state polls

New Delhi: Union home minister Rajnath Singh and road, transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed certain organisational matters and also issues related to the expansion of the council of ministers.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister also met BJP general secretaries and asked them to prepare the party to face the Assembly elections in some key states.

Sources in the party said that Mr Modi will visit the BJP office here on Monday to meet the staff and reward them with bonuses for their services.

The Prime Minister spent over an hour with the 10 party general secretaries over breakfast at his residence here seeking suggestions from them on improving governance and strengthening the party. He asked the party leaders to act as a bridge between the people and the government.

This is the first such meeting called by Mr Modi after he took charge of the government on Monday.

BJP’s general secretary, Ram Lal, Amit Shah, Ananth Kumar, Dharmendra Pradhan, Varun Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Thawarchand Gehlot, J.P. Nadda, Tapir Gao and Murlidhar Rao also attended the meeting.

Rajnath Singh and Mr Gadkari, meanwhile, spent over half-an-hour with Mr Modi and also discussed some pending issues pertaining to their ministries.

The meeting comes ahead of a possible major revamp in the party as many office-bearers of the BJP have joined as ministers in the government.

Sources said that party general secretaries Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and Om Prakash Mathur are in the race to replace Rajnath Singh as BJP president.
