New Delhi: Union HRD minister Smriti Irani, who says she wants to be “judged by her work”, is set to come up with a new education policy. She has asked officials to prepare a detailed Cabinet note to set up a National Commission on Education. Its recommendations would be used to draw up a new National Education Policy aimed at completely overhauling the existing educational system.
Sources said that broadly the commission will be tasked to report on the state of education and the reforms needed to make India a knowledge superpower. It is learnt the commission will have a two-year tenure and comprise both top academics and renowned individuals from industry, social service and other sectors.
The BJP is keen to evolve a new National Education Policy to meet the changing dynamics of a younger nation.
The commission is expected to make detailed recommendations on the quality of education, innovation and research. The aim is to equip students with skills and knowledge to eliminate manpower shortage in science, technology, academics and industry.
