Mukul Rohatgi will be new Attorney General

Mr Rohatgi's top priority would be to “streamline” litigations in the Supreme Court

New Delhi: Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi will be the new Attorney General of India. The move comes soon after the resignation of G.E. Vahanvati from the post, following the election
of Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

The Supreme Court lawyer, who will be taking over as the 14th AG of the country, said, “I have given my consent but it has to be officially announced.” Mr Rohatgi said his top priority as Attorney General would be to “streamline” litigations in the Supreme Court.

“I will see that the SC are not flooded with frivolous and petty litigations,” he said, adding he would make all efforts to check that the government does not involve itself in inter-ministerial litigations. Mr Rohtagi was one of the Additional Solicitor Generals during A B Vajpayee-led NDA at the Centre.

He has been handling several important cases defending the BJP and government, including the Babri Masjid demolition case in the Supreme Court.
