Driver dozes off, runs over cop

Sub-inspector was waving at the truck to stop, driver rammed into him

Chennai: A rashly-driven container truck killed a special sub-inspector who was conducting vehicle checks near Thiruverkadu during the early hours of Monday.

The SSI, Ravichandran, 54, attached to the Thiruverkadu police station, was on night duty on Poonamallee road.

Around 3 am, the policeman had waved at a truck to stop. However, the driver, Shankar, who had dozed off behind the wheel, rammed into Ravichandran, not aware of the police team signaling him to stop, the police said. The SI was hit badly and died on the spot.

The truck was transporting batteries from Hosur to Chennai and the driver had no intention of escaping, but had slept at the wheel due to fatigue, a police officer said.

The Poonamallee traffic investigation wing booked driver Shankar for causing death by negligence and arrested him. The policeman’s body was handed over to the family after autopsy at KMC.

City police commissioner S.George visited the family of the deceased policeman to condole his death.
