All polls being over, it’s time to develop two states

Both states will be relieved from holding any mandatory polls for at least four years

Hyderabad: With the two new governments starting to function from June 2, the Appointed Day, both states will be politically relieved from holding any mandatory polls for at least four years, as all the democratic institutions in the state have completed polls almost simultaneously along with the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

This, in a way, gives a free hand to both the governments to concentrate on development and welfare sectors, which took a beating all these years, especially from 2009. Interestingly almost all the major parties have promised to reconstruct both Telangana and Seemandhra to make them self-sufficient in infrastructure development.

Normally governments go slow in implementing development projects, if elections are coming up and prioritise the welfare schemes. This of course hampers the development plans conceived by the party in power.

The state has witnessed a series of by-polls conducted to almost 50 Assembly and Lok Sabha segments during 2010-2013 due to the advent of YSR Congress in Seemandhra and TRS in Telangana as part of building up their agitation for and against the separate Telangana state. Because of these reasons, the state government had delayed holding MPTC, ZPTC and municipal polls despite being told to do so by the apex court.

The municipal polls ought to have been held in 2010 and panchayati raj polls in 2011, but both were delayed and were only held recently. And, then the Model Code of Conduct was imposed, which delayed the development process to June, however, will witness a lot of political activities, including formation of new governments, and political parties will concentrate on electing municipal chairmen, municipal corporation mayor, chairman and presidents of zilla parishads and mandal parishad respectively, which will all be over in a month’s time.

This, however, is a blessing in disguise. The state has completed all polls like gram panchayats, cooperative societies (both held last year), ZPTC, MPTC, municipal and municipal corporations (completed recently) and the next polls are mandated only after four years i.e. for the gram panchayats and the cooperatives.
