Wanna sizzle this summer? Get the perfect beauty tips online!

Even beauty experts thank the internet for helping them keep a track on global trends
Kochi: Since childhood, Manju Mahadevan, an ayurvedic doctor from Kochi used to spend her holidays at her neighbour’s house watching the ‘beautician aunty’ dressing up brides and other pretty girls. Her passion for makeup remained with her as she grew up to become a doctor. She found an interesting ally in the Internet, which allowed her to watch online videos on makeup.
Very much the ‘beauty expert’ in her circles, Manju not only advises her friends on how to look better but also has dressed up five brides over the past year, only by referring to makeup videos and online pages.
“I am very passionate about makeup. It is very important, as it is the face that creates an impression when we interact with other people. The online videos really helped me to keep myself updated and know the latest trends. It gives me confidence to follow my passion. And my friends keep approaching me for tips to have a natural look. As for making brides pretty, I do it for fun and I really owe it to the Internet for that,” says Manju.
Manju is not alone. Many beauty-conscious women who used to rush to beauty salons for ‘one-day’ makeup, now go the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ (DIY) way. Thanks to YouTube and social networking pages, beauty has become less expensive and more accessible to Malayalis.
“Kajal and bindi were the only makeup tools that most Malayalis used till recently. Women who applied lipstick were looked upon as aliens. But now things have changed. I keep receiving queries on facial makeup, hair and nail styling on my Facebook page and I find it interesting to reply. Makeup really boosts one’s beauty. But one should use the right makeup,” says Ambika Pillai, a well-known name in the world of hair and beauty.
Aileena Catherin Amon, a popular model, finds new media an essential ingredient in her makeup kit. “Makeup tutorials on YouTube help me to strike the right look at the right place. As I am a part of an industry where parties and get-togethers happen every day, I love to try different looks. Especially the eye makeup and the hairstyles which may actually look very complicated but are two-minute jobs,” she says.
According to entrepreneur Priyanka Rajani, makeup enhances her self-confidence and self esteem and she finds whatever she needs online while rushing for parties. She says, “These online beauty videos really help me. I am a DIY person, hence I find them very inspiring, fascinating and really helpful. I get hypnotised by the enthusiastic girls who virtually talk to me and explain things in a simple way. Tutorials vary from a smoky eye makeup, to just a simple everyday make up routine or how to actually tie a messy bun! There is no doubt I am addicted to the videos and they have definitely helped me pick some worthy tips. Bye bye salon!”
IT professional Shilpa Chinnappa is excited while talking about the different kinds of makeup for different occasions such as job interviews, nights out or anniversaries. “After a good makeup when I look at myself, I scream with joy!” says Shilpa. “A good appearance shows that you respect yourself. These online videos and beauty pages in social networking sites tell me how to look my best spending minimum time,” she adds.
