Turnout higher in minority dominant wards in Chennai

Egmore and Chepauk constituencies have claimed the top two spots in voter turnout

CHENNAI: The minority dominated wards and pockets in Chennai witnessed higher polling percentage compared to the remaining pockets. In the 12 assembly constituencies in North and South Chennai, Egmore and Chepauk have claimed the top two spots in voter turnout this general elections.

Candidates in North Chennai are upset at not being provided with the assembly-wise figures of polling percentage. The highest is 63.90 percentage at Egmore, which is largely inhibited by north Indian migrants, followed by the Muslim-dominated Chepauk area with 63.31 per cent.

Mylapore, which also has a sizeable Muslim population, has also witnessed marginally higher polling percentage than the rest of the areas. It stands at 60.79 percentage. The lowest voter turnout was recorded in Harbour constituency with 57.84 per cent.

Developing areas like Sholinganallur and Virugambakkam constituencies have recorded comparatively poor figures with 59.85 per cent and 59.97 per centage respectively. Saidapet with 61.82 per cent, T. Nagar with 60.03 per cent, Velachery with 60.18 per cent are the other assembly constituencies in South Chennai, while Villivakkam (61.02), Anna Nagar (61.98) and Thousand lights (60.71) are in Central Chennai.

But pollsters in North Chennai are still expecting data from the district election office. The office of the returning officer, North Chennai, is yet to compile the data and release them to the candidates as technical snags still prevent them to do so.

Neither DMK candidate R. Girirajan, AAP’s Srinivason nor CPM’s U. Vasuki have been provided the data. A senior poll official said the break-up of the poll percentage according to assembly constituencies would be uploaded on the Election Commission website Tuesday.
