Everest avalanche spares Andhra Pradesh climbers

Accident occurred on southern side, while the students were camping on northern side

Hyderabad/ Kathmandu: The three climbers from the state who escaped an avalanche on Mt Everest belong to the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society.

The three climbers have been identified as M. Poorna, 14, Anand Kumar, 17, and Shekhar Babu.

Society secretary R.S. Praveen Kumar said the accident occurred on the southern side of the mountain while the students were camping on the northern side.

“I spoke to all the three climbers today. They told me that they are safe and are unfazed by this accident. They are determined to scale Mount Everest from the arduous northern ridge,” Mr Kumar said.

Named Swaroes (Social Welfare Aeroes), the three of them are part of a team that is attempting to summit Everest from the northern ridge in China.

The state government had sanctioned nearly Rs 70 lakh for the expedition.
