61-year-old held for molesting Irish woman in Bangalore; Railways downplay incident

The woman was suffering from fever, dehydration and diarrhea
BENGALURU: A woman tourist from Ireland was allegedly molested by a 61-year-old man in City Railway Station on Thursday. The Railway police arrested the accused, identified as Kashinath and a native of Davangere. He was later produced before the magistrate who remanded him in judicial custody.
The 33-year-old Irish woman was waiting at the paid AC waiting lounge when the incident happened. According to the police sources, she had visited Hampi and was in Bangalore Terminal to board a train for Ernakulam. As her Ernakulam train was at 5:30 pm, she decided to take rest in the lounge as she was not keeping well.
“She was suffering from fever, dehydration and diarrhea. She was shivering and an elderly man came to offer her a blanket, which she refused. The man showed up for the second time and spread the blanket over her and tried to touch her inappropriately, she said in her complaint,” said the police. The incident happened at about 11 am on the election day, the police added.
The Irish woman was later taken to K.C. General Hospital for treatment of her fever, dehydration and diarrhea and discharged.
“While questioning the accused, Kashinath, he said to the police that he had no such intention, and he had only tried to help the foreigner as she was shivering with cold,” said a police officer.
Railways downplay incident
Meanwhile railway officials downplayed the incident calling it an error of judgement. The Irish woman was unwell and she was the one who asked Kashinath to get her a blanket and when he returned to offer the same he had accidentally touched her and that made her furious to blow it out of proportion, said sources in the railways.
“Kashinath was also acting like a helper and a tout for the foreigner as he could earn some money from her,” said a contract employee, who collects money at the waiting lounges.
