Not many have the guts to throw away a lucrative job to follow their heart. Serin George did just that when she decided to quit a well-paying engineering job in Bengaluru to put on her stilettos and walk the ramp. But strangely, she found herself captivated by the world behind the camera than sashaying in front of it. And a photographer was born.
It was her tryst with modelling that unwittingly opened the doors to Serin George’s love of photography.
She explains, “When I decided to become a model in 2007, I did not have a portfolio and made one using selfies, not wanting to spend extravagant money on a portfolio. Somehow, I loved clicking pictures and went on to assist photographers, picking up lessons on the way. I then decided to branch out on my own after realising that being a photographer was what I wanted.” Serin is a renowned fashion photographer who started off doing portfolios and has now branched into advertising work.
Being a shutterbug requires Serin to travel the length and breadth of the country, something she loves doing. She currently shuttles between her twin bases of Karnataka and Kerala for her work. Serin is very candid about the work culture in both the cities and opines, “It is easy to get work in Kerala but the male ego is omnipresent! My fraternity people feel I am too frail to lift a camera. In Bengaluru, getting work is difficult but the respect is more. I wish people were more accepting of a woman in a man’s domain.”
Fitness is also something that Serin is very passionate about. She is as fit as a fiddle but says there are too many misconceptions about fitness. She adds, “I would like to train people in the future.”
Serin has been flooded with film offers too but maintains that tinsel town is a place she does not see herself fitting in. For now, she cannot think beyond her lenses.
