Wives steal a lead over men for upcoming elections in Davangere

In Davangere, spouses of Congress and BJP candidates seek votes for their husbands

Davangere: When it comes to fighting polls, the wives of candidates can hardly afford to lag behind. In Davangere Lok Sabha constituency, Congress candidate S.S. Mallikarjun and BJP candidate G.M. Siddeshwar have began a hectic campaign by visiting several villages daily.

Not to be left behind, their wives too are seeking votes for their husbands by engaging in door-to-door campaigns in villages and even outdoing their husbands in poll spirit. Davangere parliamentary constituency has witnessed a high-voltage battle between the Congress and the BJP in the past several elections with family members of both candidates taking part in the canvassing.

Ms Gayatri Siddesh, wife of BJP candidate G.M. Siddeshwar and Dr Prabha Mallikarjun, wife of Congress candidate S.S. Mallikarjun visited several villages in Honnalli taluk on Saturday seeking votes for their husbands.

While Prabha Mallikarjun held a road show in Nyamati and surrounding villages in Honnali taluk seeking people’s support for her husband and the Congress party, Ms Gayatri Siddesh held a door-to-door campaign in some villages in the same taluk on Saturday.

Their campaign style is different from that of their husbands. The wives along with party workers hold door-to-door campaigns seeking women’s votes. In contrast, Mr Siddeshwar addresses party workers and villagers in a particular village for just five minutes before leaving for the next.

Congress candidate Mr S.S. Mallikarjun visits taluk headquarters and some hoblis where he takes out a padayatra. But the wives, daring the scorching sun, along with women party workers are fiercely campaigning for their spouses.

They are also receiving a rousing welcome in villages they visit!
