Moto G or Moto X. Which one should you buy

We pit the Moto G against the Moto X to help you pick the right one

Motorola has been in the mobile phone industry for quite long now, and it is no new comer to the Indian market. With the recent news of Google acquiring Motorola and later selling it out to Lenovo, it has been the unfortunate ping-pong ball.

Well, keeping the company profile aside, Motorola has come back after a long time with the first big bang, after Google took over, launching the Moto G in the market. Not too long after that, they released another handset, the Moto X. Both handsets are doing well in the Indian market as of now. Many are confused with what they should opt for between the two handsets, and we are not surprised.

Well, the Moto X is a good Rs 10,000 higher than the Moto G. The hardware specifications also seem different with the Moto G sporting a faster processor than the Moto X. And what is even more confusing is the display size they offer. In order to make it a bit easier for you to decide, we have pitted them against each other so that you can make a choice for yourself. Let's take up some features where the two are merging into each other.

The design: Both handsets offer almost identical design. While both sport replaceable back panels, the front looks are almost similar and elegant too. The size of the two phones is also similar with the Moto X marginally slimmer than the Moto G by 8 mm. The Moto X also weighs 13 grams lower than the Moto G.

The display: The display specifications are completely different on the two handsets. While the Moto G sports an IPS LCD panel, the Moto X sports an AMOLED display. The resolutions of both the handset are identical, at 720 x 1280 pixels. The Moto X has a tad larger display size of 0.2 inches as compared to the Moto G. This decreases the pixel density of the Moto X, which stands at 312 ppi as compared to the Moto G, which stands at 326 ppi. So the Moto G would have a little sharper image as compared to the Moto X. However, an AMOLED is known for a vibrant colour reproduction and deeper blacks. The AMOLED also has a thinner display unit (because of the eliminated LED backlight) which helps making the handset even slimmer. However, the IPS display seems better than the AMOLED on the Moto X, simply because of a little sharper detail of the images. We won't actually comment here since both displays have their own advantages and disadvantages. While some prefer an IPS display, others opt an AMOLED thinking it is superior. Lastly, the two are protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass, which is definitely stronger than regular toughened glass that is seen on other handsets.

The hardware: The Moto G sports a quad core processor, but the Moto X sports a dual core and is priced higher. Well, it may seem surprising and equally confusing. The Moto X has a better GPU than the Moto G, the processor is of the Moto X is far more superior than the Moto G and also the Moto X is supplied with 2 GB of RAM in contrast to the 1 GB of RAM on the Moto G. So in real-world scoring, where hardware power is concerned, the Moto X is definitely faster in pure performance. The Moto X also has the ability of managing background tasks to save on battery life and boost performance accordingly.

The storage: The two handsets are available in 16 GB variants. While the Moto G is available in 8 GB and 16 GB options, the Moto X has only the 16 GB variant on stands for now. However, both have the same issue of storage, as you cannot expand it further since they both don’t sport a micsoSD card slot. However, you can increase the storage using the USB OTG option and plug in a USB pen drive externally to increase the space.

The Operating system: While the Moto G was available with Jelly Bean, the Moto X comes with Kitkat out of the box. Moto G has stated that the Moto G will be upgraded to Kitkat soon. So there is no worry about operating system issues for now.

Other features: The two handsets sport differences in a lot of ways, but a few are really of concern.

  • Micro SIM vs Nano SIM
  • LTE option on the Moto X
  • HSDPA: 21 Mb/s vs 42.2 Mb/s on the Moto X
  • Video recording: 720p vs 1080p on the Moto X
  • FM radio missing on the Moto X
  • Wi-Fi ac additional on the Moto X
  • NFC available on the Moto X

To conclude, the latest entrant is definitely superior to the older, and we would definitely recommend the Moto X over it. However, if you are not bothered about additional features that don’t seem to be useful in India as yet, such as NFC and LTE, Wi-Fi ac, then the Moto G is a good option with a huge Rs 10,000 saving. If you are one of those critics who would want to have a superior handset in your pocket, and definitely want a handset with performance and additional features, the Moto X is your right choice.

We have put in the main differences in front of you and left you to decide which one you can afford and which one you prefer. So make your choice. If you already own one of these handsets, don’t forget to put down your comments and choice regarding the experience and drawbacks. We would like to hear from you, and your comments could help someone making the choice on one.
