Malayali passenger held with gold wires

He converted gold into thin wires, and plated them with aluminium.

Hyderabad: A Malayali passenger was held at the RGI airport for allegedly concealing gold by converting it into thin wires, and plating the wires with aluminium.

He had then placed the wires on the edges of his bag. Customs officials found the passenger, Abdul Rahiman, who came from Dubai, had replaced the normal steel wires on the edges of his trolley bag with gold wires weighing 400 grams.

“Abdul Rahiman came by Emirates flight EK 524 from Dubai in the morning. While scanning his bag, some bright wires were spotted. When we checked them manually, we found that he had replaced the steel wires on the edges of the bag with aluminium-plated gold wires,” said officials. They said that the gold was worth around Rs 12 lakh.

The passenger belongs to the Kasargod district of Kerala. Customs officials also caught another person from Hyderabad while he was trying to smuggle 221 grams of gold by concealing it in his body. The passenger, Isa Hashim, came from Thailand via Singapore on Tiger Air.

“When we searched him, we found that he was wearing a gold chain weighing 221 grams,” said an official. Officials said that the they seized gold worth Rs 18 lakh on Monday.
