Hyderabad: Faced with a sharp rise in the number of fire mishaps, the city’s fire department is now planning to take strict measures to crack down on establishments that have been running without fire safety certificates.

The fire departments are also being slammed for delays in response times. The recent fire tragedies at Gagan Pahad, that charred four people to death, and the massive fire at the timber depot in Musheerabad are examples of establishments operating without basic fire and safety rules. But so far, no notices have been issued to the heads of these companies.

In November last year, over 89 fire accidents were reported and in December, about 121 mishaps were reported. Over 35 of the 89 fire accidents from November were due to faulty electricals and in that month. Malakpet reported the highest number of of fire-related emergencies.

In the following month, several fire accidents were reported from the South zone, with Secunderabad registering over 24 incidents. The loss of property, in over just two months, has been estimated at a '60 lakh.

But now, fire departments are moving strongly against offenders. “We will issue notices and prosecute the guilty. They have to comply with fire safety norms and act according to the rules set by us. All the factories that do not have proper fire and safety equipment in place, will have to set up new and upgraded mechanisms and go by the rules,” said regional fire officer G.V. Narayana.

A proposal to have 19 new fire stations across the state was set in place along with a plan to develop a team of 30 emergency response specialists. But the GHMC and the AP Fire and Disaster Management Services are yet to regulate the new industries.
