Congress considers triple role for Rahul Gandhi

Cong mulls over 3 roles for Rahul: Campaign committee chief, working president or PM.

New Delhi: The Congress is projecting three roles for the party vice president Rahul Gandhi on the eve of a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) expected to take a call on the growing demand of projecting the young Gandhi as the Congress' prime ministerial candidate. The three roles are: Make him the campaign committee chief, working president and Prime Minister even for three months, said insiders.

The Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and PM, Manmohan Singh, would have to take a call of a role for Rahul Gandhi after he has left it to the High Command in a media interview a couple of days ago.

Rahul Gandhi has not refused to become the PM candidate. While the juniors, second rung want his projection as the PM candidate, the seniors are going cautiously and opposing the very idea under different pretext. A Congress strategist on Wednesday said "entire world knows that after Sonia Gandhi, it is Rahul Gandhi."

The Congress leaders are speaking in different voices on the issue of Rahul Gandhi's projection perhaps as a strategy. This is because they had followed the same strategy in the AICC meeting held in Jaipur in January 2013.The meeting had endorsed CWC resolution of making the young Gandhi party vice president.

The party is also keeping Priyanka Gandhi attending the AICC meeting, being held here on Friday, a secret saying "it is for her to decide." A section of the party views that there is no point in announcing Rahul as the PM candidate at this juncture, instead his becoming a PM would help the Congress more than his projection.

This is because he (Rahul) would take decisions which will give results in the Lok Sabha polls.Insiders asked if the ‘leadership' does not want to project him as the PM candidate then why is it allowing the debate on it.
