UGC loses power to AICTE following SC direction, will continue to monitor B-schools functioning.
Hyderabad: Ending uncertainty over B-school admissions, the University Grants Commission has finally given some much-needed clarity over their ‘recognition status’.
The All India Council for Technical Education, which lost regulatory powers to the UGC recently, following directions from the Supreme Court, will continue to monitor functioning of B-schools.
While the UGC will regulate management institutes offering masters degree in management courses (MBA), the AICTE will regulate the B-schools offering Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) courses.
The development comes just in time as the results of the Common Admission Test (CAT-2013) is set to be announced on January 14 and several B-schools give admissions based on the CAT scores of aspirants.
There was uncertainty over the admissions procedure for B-schools this year due to doubts over their recognition — whether they will be recognised by the AICTE or the UGC.
B-schools recognised by the AICTE and are not affiliated to any university. So, with the AICTE losing regulatory powers over technical and management institutes, the University Grants Commission has issued a clarification stating that B-schools still come under AICTE, since the Supreme Court had only pointed out that institutes affiliated to universities cannot be regulated by AICTE and B-schools are usually not affiliated to any university.
