Kapil Dev feted with Lifetime Achievement Award

Mumbai: India’s first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev was on Saturday conferred with the C.K. Nayudu Life Time Achievement award at BCCI’s annual awards ceremony.

The former Indian all-rounder was elated to get the award. “We go out there to enjoy on the field without caring for awards and rewards but it is good to get recognised later for it,” said Kapil who was once part of the rebel Indian Cricket League.

“I have to thank all the captains under whom I played and my teammates who supported me,” he added.

In a moment to cherish, current skipper M.S. Dhoni joined Kapil on stage and the two exchanged their World Cup trophies to a rousing applause.

R. Ashwin won the Polly Umrigar Trophy for outstanding performance during the season from October 2012 to September 2013. “It is a dream come true for me,” said Ashwin who took 43 wickets and scored 260 runs during that time in eight Tests. He also took 24 wickets in 18 ODIs.

Rohit Sharma won the Dilip Sardesai Trophy for doing well (scoring 288 runs in two Tests) in a bilateral series against West Indies. Mumbai Cricket Association won the best association award. Mumbai’s former skipper Abhishek Nayar won the best all-rounder in Ranji Trophy 2012-13.

Highest scorer Ranji: Jiwanjot Singh. Highest wickettaker: Ishwar Pandey. Best U-25 cricketer: Karan Sharma. U-19: Akhsar Patel. Women cricketer of the year: M.D. Thirushkamini. Best domestic umpire: C. Shamsuddin. Special awards: R.G. Bapu Nadkarni, Farokh Engineer and Eknath Solkar.
