Vivekananda initiative launched for women

150 Women’s Initiative to hold its first convention at Chennai on January 23.

Chennai: An ambitious project to propel the Indian woman power to provide global leadership in tackling critical socio-economic problems has been launched here in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, who is hailed as the foremost campaigner for empowerment of women.

The Swami Vivekananda 150 Women’s Initiative (SV150WI) will hold its first convention at Chennai on January 23 when the blueprint for the project would be unveiled.

Over 1000 wo­men participants, including top professionals as well as educated housewi­ves are expected to attend the meet, where experts in various fields will enumerate on various dimensions of Indian womanhood—economic, social and cultural.

The logo and website (http://www.sv150wi.org/) were launched here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, renowned dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, who is the organising chairperson for the Jan 23 convention, said the Indian woman has the potential to provide solutions to various socio-economic problems facing the world.

‘Indian woman as the guide for the World at Crossroads’ will be the convention theme. Speakers would highlight the need for “an alternate Indian thought driven by Indian womanhood that has the propensity to address global issues”, she said.

Also pr­esent on the occasion were Akhila Srin­iva­san, ma­naging director, Shriram Life Insurance and He­ma Gopal, vice-president, Tata Consultancy Service.

Several experts, including cancer specialist Dr V Shanta, Dr Preetha Reddy of Apollo Hospitals, Vanitha Mohan of Siruthuli (Coimbatore) and Dr Kamala Selvaraj will address the convention.
