Bangalore: Two city-based government hospitals — KC General Hospital and Jayanagar General Hospital are set to undergo preassessment for National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation.

The preassessment for KC General Hospital will be done on December 27, whereas for Jayanagar General Hospital it will be on January 7-8. The two hospitals will be the first government hospitals in the state to undergo NABH assessment.

For the past few months the two hospitals have been preparing for the accreditation. Dr Saroja, Medical Superintendent, Jayanagar General Hospital told Deccan Chronicle, “We are working on all the possible issues and trying to work out all statutory requirements as per the NABH accreditation. The quality of service, infrastructure, human resource requirements, patients’ service and care, everything is being worked out. Above all the hospital documentation is a priority.”

Following the assessment, the officials will identify the gaps and we need to fill it up within a stipulated time, she added. The NABH is a constituent board of Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organisations.

Accreditation will benefit all stakeholders, especially the patients. It will result in better quality of patient care and safety. The patients will be served by medical staff with good credentials and rights of patients will be respected and protected. Once hospital gets NABH accreditation, the patient satisfaction will be regularly evaluated.

Meanwhile, when asked about the benefits of the assessment, a senior medical official from KC General Hospital said, “Once the hospital gets accreditation, the services will be like that of corporate hospitals. There will be no differentiation in the cost of treatment. Everyone will be provided the same class of treatment as it is now available in corporate hospitals.”

He further stated, “Though we are trying to keep up with the requirements for the NABH accreditation, but getting human resources is a problem. However we are trying our best. Following the requirement we have redone the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital, and it is as good as any other
corporate hospital.”
