Malayalam Movie Review: 'Drishyam'

DC | Dalton L | December 22, 2013, 09.12 am IST

Film: Drishyam
Actors: Mohanlal, Meena, Kalabhavan Shajon, Siddique, Ansiba, Esther
Director: Jeethu Joseph
Rating: Three stars

Chronic movie buffs have minds that bustle with a zillion clever ideas. 'Drishyam' (Seeing) itself, suspiciously, is the result of such. Its protagonist uses ideas from the movies he’s watched to continuously outfox the entire police outfit.

Cable TV owner, Georgekutty (Mohanlal), has been schooled only up to standard four and does not read the daily news. But he’s good natured, and knows everyone and everything. On a day when he isn’t at home, his wife Rani (Meena) and daughters Anju (Ansiba) and Anu (Esther) get their hands dirty. Something terrible happens by accident that shouldn’t have.

The success of the scripting and dialogues lies in its effectiveness in empathizing with the common man. The wife and kids desire a better lifestyle. But the man of the house is a little tight with his purse, for he has larger hopes and dreams. They are an ordinary family which commits a mistake that could happen to anyone and find themselves locked up in an inescapable situation. The antagonist here is the supposed enforcers of the laws.

The opening take is very long, and stylish; and seemingly meaningless. The camera stares at the passengers in a moving bus till all the credits roll up the screen. Then, it gets down, and follows a man. When he enters a teashop, the camera walks around him, and observes his expressions as he orders a tea and converses. What the cameraman found so interesting in a bit actor may appear as something of a mystery. Until one realizes: it’s just the producer doing a cameo.

The shots when people are seated around a table are unimaginative; mostly static. And ensure that some of the actors shift uneasily in their seats, clueless on what they ought to be doing with their hands. The lighting on certain occasions adds to the comedy: the hot fumes from the HMI bulbs actually float over the heads of the actors.

Keeping with the circumstances, the mother and daughters change the color of their respective skins. Kalabhavan Shajon too, in the role of the bad guy, a cop, puts up a striking performance. But the limelight belongs entirely to Mohanlal. Like the versatile greats of Hollywood, this actor possesses such a vast repertoire that he isn’t required to always attempt the radically new to stamp his towering persona.

Jeethu Joseph’s cat-and-mouse thriller, comprising elements that aren’t exactly fresh, underscores the necessity of street smartness and alternate sources of information, for survival. And sprinkles glitter on the megastar.

Have you even watched the movie ? This is not how someone should be reviewing a movie ! Thumbs down to DC and the writer . A big thumbs up for the movie ! Focus on the technicalities of a movie after analysing the story script and the emotions it instills in a viewer! Who gives a damn about the lighting when you are forced to clap hands N number of times during the movie! Movie of a Lifetime!

Drishyam is Director Jeethu Joseph’s fourth venture after hugely successful memories with Pritviraj. His debut as director was the investigation thriller Detective which had interesting plot but execution was not up to the mark. But he improved drastically after each film and Drishyam can be considered as his best till date. His three films are thrillers and he delivers best in this genre. After Memories now he is considered one of leading and very promising among new comers. http://thevibrationsmusic.blogspot.in/2013/12/drishyam-2013-malayalam-movie-review.html

After long time I am seeing a movie in theater and wow!what a movie.Full credits to the actors, director and technicians. I am happy that I saw the move in the theater itself and enjoyed all the moments. An entirely different approach and it succeeded well. Khudos to team Jithu!

kudos to the writer of this review for proving that you don need any knowledge about what you say to become a critic!! I feel sad to say a newspaper of deccan chronicle standards stooped to a level where in they criticize a truly good movie.. if you want to talk about technical details of a movie I might as well challenge you on board for the same coz I understand you don know any nuances about movies. I may not have directed or been a part of any movies but in my lifetime I can assure you I have collected and watched movies which account for more than what you will do in a life time. This movie caught my attention through each and every frame they depicted. I feel to say a movie I would name with the same breath as of shawshank redemption and co when it comes to thrillers. Regarding jeethu joseph we should be proud of having such a director ( he proved the same with the mode of killing in detective and the shots of "memories") when it comes to thrillers ( apart from "My Boss" which was a loosely adapted copy in my eyes of "The Proposal" ).Asha Sharath has been a revelation in the movie. Shajoon showed what he is really capable off and is here to stay. All the cast played exceedingly well and the script and story was like hand in glove. Cant talk about Mohan Lal though as I don think I can ever reach a point to even talk about him ( God knows how he pulls it off and he really is an institution of acting )- Overall This is a Must Watch with a much better higher and sensible rating than what you gave..

Most pathetic review ever read. Are you trying to review the movie or show of your technical knowledge. If the story is as catchy as this movie, no body will even notice your HMI bulbs and all Dalton. First learn how to do your job than giving stupid complaints on such a good work

I just watched the movie... and it was a late night show. I was scared tht i may sleep through the entire movie.. but the movie had me hooked till the last scene. this is a terrible critique of the movie - you just do not base an entire review on technical aspects alone.

I saw Drishyam today only. A top class thriller, and each link is well joined. I could not understand why this review is saying so negative about this film. Either the person who wrote have not seen the movie, or he/she does not know anything about a good movie. Sorry to read such a review in Deccan.

Movie is a very well executed movie., But the concept or some dialogues that the hero tells does not set the best example, In my opinion Mohanlal slowly becomes sort of Anti hero, and in the last scene with meena, He even tells "If we think like that (Like Meena thinks) we cant survive in this world)"..Hope the film could have been told in a more ethical way.

Drishyam, ofcourse a family thriller captures the full attention and sympathy from the viewers for the innocent victim and her family. Jithu has done it wonderfully to make it a commercial hit by cleverly considering the targeted population and the chosen actors.Congrats Jitu for the commercial success for the filim. Many scenes resembles Mohanlals previous family hits from Blessy and others, Though?!..
