The CBI immediately searched the premises of Joint Commissioner and claimed to have made recoveries of documents that pointed to amassing huge immovable assets. Both the officials have been arrested and are being questioned by the CBI sleuths.

The CBI claimed that searches at the residence of Nayak led to recovery of documents relating to the income tax proceedings; documents of four-storeyed well-furnished building at Bomikhal, Bhubaneswar; one double-storey house at Cuttack; one plot in Sapur, Bhubaneswar; one plot at his native near Tirtol, Jagatsinghpur and nine bank accounts in his own name and family members.

Hubli: The suicide by a farmer and contractor who supplied cane to a sugar factory has kicked up a row with agricultural labourers ransacking the office of the factory in Gangapur village of Mundaragi taluk in Gadag on Monday.

A tense situation prevailed in the village as the relatives of the deceased and farm labourers pelted stones at the office of the factory.

The police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the agitating farm labourers while the deceased’s relatives alleged that it was a case of murder by factory authorities.

The deceased farmer Rama Nayak (40) had taken a contract to supply sugarcane to Vijayanagar Sugar Pvt Ltd situated in the village and had obtained a Rs 5 lakh loan from the factory.

He had pledged 3.5 acres of agricultural land owned by him with the factory for this purpose.

Nayak had agreed to supply 8-10 loads of sugarcane to the factory every day in bullock-carts.

But, he could not supply the cane as he failed to get labourers for harvesting the crop. Moreover, his bulls were suffering from foot and mouth disease.

This prompted the factory authorities to demand that the farmer return the Rs 5 lakh taken as loan.

Finally, he committed suicide by hanging himself inside the room after he was held captive for several days.

"Factory authorities refused to give him time to repay the loan despite several pleas made by us.", said farm labourer Durga Nayak.
