Dealer held for underweight cylinders

An LPG dealer at Kadanadu near Pala who supplied LPG cylinders.

Kottayam: An LPG dealer at Kadanadu near Pala who supplied LPG cylinders of less weight has been booked by the legal metrology department.

The four gas cylinders he supplied to the homes at Kadanadu on Thursday had a weight loss ranging from one kilo and 150 grams to one kilo and 250 grams.

On suspicion, the consumers weighed them in a local shop and informed the metrology department officials.

“The seal of the cylinders were fixed after removing them. This caused doubt among us. The metrology officials also found less gas in four cylinders,” Jomon Augustine, a consumer, told DC.
The four cylinders had chalk marks at the top to identify them. Previously, there were complaints in this regard, he said.

The officials, who registered a case against the dealer under section 30 of the legal metrology Act, also seized the cylinders. “The investigation is going on and we are verifying what happened,” said V.S. Janardhanan, assistant controller, legal metrology flying squad, Kottayam.

He said a report will be submitted to the Indian Oil Corporation and the court after investigation. The dealers say that this might be due to the packing flaws at the Indian Oil Corporation plant.

“A loss of weight up to 50 grams are pardonable. This can be countered by the consumers checking the weight frequently,” Babu Ponmankal, a gas dealer in Ettumanur, told DC.
