Bread omelette favourite meal on trains

Biriyani comes second; middle berth most hated.

Kochi: Bread omelette is the favourite food of Keralites during train journeys, according to a survey conducted among regular train travellers. The survey says 27 percent of the travellers from Kerala go for bread omelettes, although 50 percent said they prefer bringing food from home.

The special pantry-made bread omelettes are followed by biriyani and snacks like banana fry and uzhunnu vada. The survey also says Malayalis are also fond of idli and dosa with chutney during long trips.

A traveller from Kerala said: “Biriyani is my favourite food from the train pantry. Snacks are good too. In the 70s and 80s, the railways used to serve superb chicken roast. Missing that nowadays,” he said. The statistics from Kerala is part of a nation-wide survey titled ‘Confessions of Indian train travellers’ conducted by a holiday review website, HolidayIQ.com, on 2,300 travellers.

The survey also says reading is the favourite pastime of Malayalis at 56 percent. Twelve percent prefer talking to their co-passengers.

When it comes to berth preferences, lower and upper berths are Keralites’ favourites, while side-lower were the most preferred among 18 to 35- year- olds. Travellers were unanimous in their hatred for the middle berth.

The statistics shows that 37 percent of travellers hated ‘loud passengers.’ Snorers were the second most hated lot with 21 percent, followed by ‘window seat snatchers’ at 17 percent and people who burp too much at 14 percent.

Luggage hoarders, people who litter and people carrying smelly food are also found annoying. Forty percent women said co-passengers had flirted with them, which was highest among 18 to 35-year-olds.
