BSNL network error hits subscribers

The mobile phone network of BSNL remained paralysed for over three hours across the state on Tuesday.

Thiruvananthapuram: The mobile phone network of BSNL remained paralysed for over three hours across the state on Tuesday following a major snag at the BSNL power plant at Trippunithura which provides backup for one of the major servers.

BSNL has 80 lakh subscribers in the state. The authorities said the control card at the power plant malfunctioned resulting in disruption of supply to the server. This also brought the functioning of the location register and routers to a grinding halt.

Most BSNL mobile users had a harrowing time unable to make or receive calls. The functioning of police and various government departments, which use BSNL network, was badly hit for nearly three hours. However, a section of subscribers said they could access SMS services during the breakdown which came as a huge relief.

The authorities said with a large number of subscribers making repeated attempts for calls at the same time, efforts to restore the services got delayed. However, a team of technical experts removed the snag and restored the mobile services by 6 p.m.
