AAP MLAs choose Arvind Kejriwal as leader in Assembly

Legislators assure the leaders that they would remain united & not succumb to any allurements.

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party legislators unanimously elected Arvind Kejriwal as their leader in the Delhi Assembly on Monday.

"All the 28 newly elected MLAs, including senior party leaders, held a meeting here and unanimously chose Kejriwal as their leader," a senior party leader said.

The MLAs and party leaders also discussed about the future course of action after the party decided to play the role of a constructive opposition.

Amidst reports of AAP leaders being approached by rival BJP to defect and support the party to form the government, the AAP leader said party has confidence on its MLAs.

The legislators also discussed about the issue at length and assured party leaders that they would remain united and not succumb to any allurements, he said.

After a split verdict in the election results, Kejriwal had said he will not support any party, nor take support to form the government.

Earlier in the day, top AAP leaders met at Kejriwal's residence and reiterated that the party will not stake claim to form the government and would play the role of a constructive opposition.

AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said even if Lt Governor Najeeb Jung invited the party to form the government, it will decline such an offer citing lack of majority.

"We are not going to form the government. We will sit in the opposition and play the role of a constructive opposition. As per the Constitution, the largest party has to take the responsibility of forming government," Yadav said.

"We don't have the mandate to form the government. It is a strange situation where the single largest party is asking the number 2 party to form the government," he said.
