Volleyball season beckons

Fourteen teams in the men's category and six in the women's category will vie for the volleyball championship in Kollam.

Kochi: The state senior volleyball championship will be held from December 1 to 8 at Kolathupuzha in Kollam. Fourteen teams will vie in the men's category while six teams will face off in the women's category.

In the championship, Kerala Police spikers will play as the Kollam team. Last year, the cop's team had played as Wayanad team and won the senior championship defeating Ernakulam. The matches will be held in the evenings starting from 5 pm. The group matches will end on December 5.

“Last year, starting from the state championship, volleyball received a good boost. We hope for a similar kind of reaction this year also. The place has several die-hard fans of volleyball and stars like Tom Joseph would surely make an impact,“ says state volleyball association secretary Nalakath Basheer.

“This will be first time the championship will be held in Kolathupuzha. The place is famous for its volleyball fans. It will be nice to play amidst volleyball lovers,” said Tom Joseph.

“It is after 18 years, the senior volleyball championship is going to be held in Kollam and for the first time in Kolathupuzha. We are gearing up for the event though the preparations have been delayed due to heavy rain,” said Anil, a member of the organising committee.

Sunil Sam, a cricketer playing for Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy, hails from the rustic town. “It is a scenic town in Kollam.

Though I grew up playing cricket, volleyball and the people have always been in my mind. It is good to see that the championship will be held at the venue,” says Sam.
