New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee was petitioned by representatives of political parties, including the Congress, on Monday, seeking a judicial inquiry into the snoopgate controversy allegedly involving Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
The Congress also alleged that 93,000 unauthorised interceptions were made by the Gujarat government in seven months in 2012.
Indicating that the issue of human rights violation, illegal snooping and telephone tapping in Gujarat will be raised during the Winter Session of Parliament, beginning on December 5, Congress spokesperson P.C. Chacko said the BJP should be isolated politically on these issues.
Activist Shabnam Hashmi from Anhad accused Modi’s close aide Amit Shah of committing offences under various laws “under directions” from the chief minister in running an “illegal snooping racket” against a woman. She alleged “blatant violation of Constitutional oath”.
“Social activists and representatives of political parties met the President and submitted a memorandum in which they demanded that the kind of surveillance that was done in Gujarat using full state machinery, local IB and ATS, is a misuse of the state apparatus and a judicial inquiry should be held.”
