Paleolithic Quartz Hand Axe Discovered Near Kongarakalan

Hyderabad: A paleolithic quartz stone hand axe was discovered near Kongarakalan on the city surroundings, adding to evidence of ancient human habitation in the region. Similar Paleolithic axes and points made of quartz stone at Manchirevula BeerappagGutta in the Manchirevula forest trek park.
Mir Omar Ali Khan, vice-president of Climate Front Telangana and member of Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam (KTCB), and Sripathi Vaishnav, a wildlife conservationist, found the axe in the forest area adjoining Kongarakalan at Kongara Khurd 'B' of Rangareddy district’s Maheshwaram mandal, during a joint field exploration with support from forest department staff.
The team also collected a round sling stone made of the same quartz. This finding indicated that sling stones existed even during the Paleolithic age which started some 30 lakh years ago and lasted till about 10,000 before common era (BCE).

The team said there is need for extensive research on these areas by archaeologists.
