MoD Signs ₹811-Crore Deal With BDL For 160 Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons
The contract, signed in New Delhi on Wednesday in the presence of defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, has been placed under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
Hyderabad:The ministry of defence signed an ₹810.79-crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for 160 satellite smart anti airfield weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF) to strengthen its precision strike capability with an indigenously designed system.
The contract, signed in New Delhi on Wednesday in the presence of defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, has been placed under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. The 160 weapons are scheduled to be delivered during 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed to strike enemy airfields from a long stand-off range. According to the defence ministry, it can be launched from Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI aircraft, allowing the IAF to engage airfield targets without having to approach them directly.
The weapon has been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will have 60 per cent indigenous content, regional defence PRO Siva Hari Naik said. The programme also includes indigenous subsystems such as the initial measurement unit, long impact delay fuse and twin store carrier, supporting greater domestic capability in critical weapon components.
