WARANGAL: Bathukamma celebrations began across the erstwhile Warangal district on Saturday, with women marking Engili Pula Bathukamma, the first day of the nine-day floral festival of Telangana.
Women arranged colourful Bathukammas using seasonal flowers, worshipped Goddess Gauri and gathered around the floral arrangements to sing traditional songs, clap and dance.
In Warangal city, celebrations were held at the Vishweshwara Temple in Kashibugga, Thota Grounds in the 23rd division, CKM College grounds, the Shiva temple in Kashibugga, the Rama temple in Shivanagar and Ranganaik Grounds, among other locations. Former minister Konda Surekha attended the celebrations at Thota Grounds.
Women also gathered at the historic Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanamkonda. Dressed in traditional attire, women and girls carried floral arrangements and participated in the celebrations at temples and open grounds.
Bathukammas were arranged in layers using seasonal flowers such as gunugu, tangedu, marigold and pumpkin flowers, with an image of Goddess Gauri placed at the top. Women offered prayers and sang traditional songs, including “Okkesi Puvvesi Chandamama”, while moving in circles around the floral arrangements.
The festival reflects Telangana’s cultural traditions and the bond between women and nature. Families, relatives and neighbours come together to celebrate with seasonal flowers and folk songs, highlighting community participation and social harmony.
The celebrations will continue for nine days and conclude with Saddula Bathukamma.
