Business Tycoon Roy Dies By Suicide At His Office In Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Under pressure reportedly from Kerala Income Tax team of officials over tax evasion, business tycoon Dr C.J. Roy (57) chairman of Confident Group, a major real estate conglomerate, allegedly died by suicide by shooting himself with his firearm (pistol) at his corporate office near Richmond Circle of Bengaluru city on Friday at around 3.15 pm.
It is said Roy shot himself in his chest with his pistol leading to his death when an IT team of officials were reportedly at his corporate office for questioning.
Sources said IT officials questioned Roy at his corporate office for about an hour and Roy went to his private office to ferry some documents sought by the IT team. At the private office, Roy is said to have shot himself.
The Confident Group is known for its luxury projects and innovative constructions in Bengaluru, Kerala and Dubai. A team of IT officials from Kerala were at the corporate office in Bengaluru to question C.J. Roy and were engaged in questioning Roy for the last couple of days in connection with searches and raids on Confident Group in December 2025.
While IT officials were reportedly at the office, Roy is alleged to have shot himself with the firearm at his private office and on hearing the firearm sound, staff members rushed to the office and discovered their Chairman seriously injured. Roy was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. Meanwhile, jurisdictional police officers from Ashok Nagar arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.
Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru Seemanth Kumar Singh told reporters prima facie it looks like Roy shot himself with his firearm (pistol) while confirming that IT team of officials were constantly engaged in questioning Roy including Friday. Police are trying to establish contact with IT officials to gather details on their presence when Roy himself is at his corporate office.
Based on a complaint from one of the directors of Confident Group, the Commissioner said police will begin their investigation. However, he said to ascertain the presence of the IT officials' team when Roy shot himself. Singh said ballistic experts will determine the caliber of the firearm among other details.
A brother of Roy, C.J. Babu said his brother had told him about pressure being mounted on him by the IT team and stated he too was summoned by IT officials to which he responded.
“A strong man,” Babu said of Roy's attitude and made it clear “He was not under any debt or faced any threats.”
While, advocate Prakash heading a legal team of Confident Group expressed “shock” over the alleged suicide of Roy and termed his death a “tragedy.” A Congress leader and family friend of Roy, Mohammad Nalpad termed Roy a “jovial” person and stated “Roy always instilled confidence in me.”
The family members of Dr C.J. Roy family members residing in Dubai were informed over the incident and they have left for Bengaluru. The final rites of C.J. Roy will be conducted in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Bengaluru incharge and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar assured a high-level investigation into the death of Dr C.J. Roy.
