Udupi: Twenty-seven fishermen were rescued after their fishing boat began sinking in the Arabian Sea off Gangolli on Wednesday afternoon.

The fishermen were aboard the Sri Balanjaneya, which had ventured into the Arabian Sea from Gangolli Manganese Jetty for fishing. At around 3.30 pm, the boat was about three nautical miles from the Gangolli sea mouth when strong waves struck it.

The impact damaged one of the planks of the boat. As a result seawater continued to flood the vessel, and the boat began sinking.

On being alerted, personnel of the Gangolli Coastal Security Police and members of the KND team set out for the spot in the fishing boats Sumukha and Matyamrutha (Srinidhi).

The rescue team reached the stricken vessel and shifted all 27 fishermen to the boats that had come to their aid. Sri Balanjaneya boat, however, could not be saved and eventually sank completely into the sea.

The fishermen were brought back safely to Gangolli harbour. The operation was carried out by the team led by Gangolli CSP Police Inspector Ramesh K.
